This week's edition is a bit abbreviated because there has been a lot of out of town travel amongst us.

4th Friday Night Cruise-In (Ol' School Night) @ Bull City Street Rod Association - Come out and see what cars used to look like back when people were actually buying them. The event starts at 6:00pm.

The Omen @ Carolina Theatre - part of their RETROFANTASMA festival, starts at 7pm:

A monthly film series of double-features dedicated to bringing classic horror movies back to the big screen in 35mm! Created in 1998, RETROFANTASMA has developed a large dedicated audience of horror movie enthusiasts whose desire to see their favorite terror flicks is matched only by their willingness to cheer at the screen. From John Carpenter to Dario Argento to Lucio Fulci, this diverse film series offers it's audience a joyful jolt of terror and nostalgia. You'll likely find yourself screaming and applauding in the same breath. Before long, you'll be joining the thousands of people who have whispered in the dark to their friends, "Did you ever see the one where....?" Much like the infamous midnight screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The RETROFANTASMA Film Series is pure devilish fun for anyone who loves the mysterious.

Improv Comedy @ West 94th Street Pub - An excellent dive-bar in southern Durham, perhaps worth the trip for this event which starts at 9pm.

Txakoli Fest @ Six Plates Wine Bar - See our feature on this event. It starts at 1pm and they have a lot planned.

Wine Tasting @ Wine Authorities - As a kick-off to the Txakoli Fest, the Craig & Seth will be serving up some of the fine wine at their free Satudray wine tasting at 1pm.

Heirs to a Fighting Tradition @ Durham Main Library - For you activists out there, the Heirs to a Fighting Tradition project is having a panel discussion at the Durham Library from 4 - 5:30pm. The project aims "to strengthen and broaden the base of the North Carolina social justice organizers who have the skills, passion and capacity to work collectively for fundamental social transformation."

The Durham music scene is also alive in well, check out the Social Calendar at the top of the page for more info, bands playing throughout the weekend.

Txakoli Fest at Six Plates

This Saturday, Six Plates will be holding their "Txakoli Fest," presenting a day full of live music and wine. Their purpose: spreading the good word about txakoli wine (pronounced “chah-ko-lee”), which is produced in the Basque country of Spain. It's a delightful but under appreciated summer wine, a very dry and slighly sparkling white. As it pairs well with oysters, head chef Ted Domville will be crafting six different versions of oysters on the half-shell.

There is a five dollar cover charge, but it comes with a free txakoli glass. It also includes a full line up of bands, the schedule for which is listed below:

"Magnetic Attraction," An Exhibit of Found Object Art @ Bean Traders - Local 18 year old sculpter Laura Madejczyk puts together projects utilizing creative re-use.

EXPLORE! Rhythm - Everyone can play @ CCB Plaza - Performances by regional symphony RTOOT (the Really Terrible Orchestra Of the Triangle), and by the Scene of the Crime Rovers, Durham's own community street band. Will include hands-on activities such as a drum circle, and musical instrument construction utilizing recycled materials.

Friends and Family Show @ Scrap Exchange - A call for artists! Bring your own work to hang at the Green Gallery.

Reception for Trey Moore Exhibit / Open Studios @ Bull City Arts Collaborative - Wilmington, NC artist Trey Moore presents his exhibit "Hands & Faces: Paintings & Collage."

Janet Stolp and a Slice of Durham @ Brightleaf - Singer/songwriter Janet Stolp leads her group, performing a blend of folk and jazz.

Art Hanging @ Kung Fu Tattoo - Features the work of Tarah Singh and Owen Beckmann. Tarah's work visualizes a feminine experience and her South American culture. Owen's contemporary work is a representation of the hip-hop generation.

Live Music & Art Exhibit @ Broad Street Cafe - Bluegrass band Red Creek Cider at 8pm, Big Daddy Love at 10pm. Artist Bonnie Marie is presenting her paintings, dedicated to her Grandmother Joan, who passed away may 9th after a long battle with Alzheimers.

Nicotine Cinema @ Durham Central Park - An outdoor film show at the park, presented by Durham Cinematheque. Short films include "Princess Nicotine" (J. Stuart Blackton, 1909), "Who Do You Think You Are" (Mary Filippo, 1987), "Cigarette Blues" (Les Blank, 1986) and television commercials for cigars and cigarettes, banned from the airwaves since 1971.

Live Music @ Papa Mojo's - Mighty Lester goes on at 9:30, heating up Papa Mojo's with R&B, blues and jive.

Chaz's Birthday Party @ Pinhook - Local legend Chaz Martenstein is celebrating his birthday at the Pinhook. Three bands will be peforming: The Dry Heathens at 10pm, Pretty Boy Thurson & the F'n A's at 11pm, and The Whatever Brains at midnight.

Women's Bike Repair Clinic @ Durham Bike Co-op - This is the latest installment of a Monthly clinic by and for women and women-identified folks on various aspects of bicycle repair.

Merge with Motion @ Carolina Theatre - To kick off Merge Records's 20th Anniversary Celebration, dancers from the Triangle Youth Ballet will perform contemporary ballet, rhythm tap and modern dance to the music of The Rosebuds, performers will dance to music from Arcade Fire, Caribou, Destroyer, the Magnetic Fields, Polvo, Richard Buckner, Spaceheads, Spoon and more.

Happy Birthday, Golden Belt!

As part of this month's Third Friday festivities, Golden Belt will be celebrating it's 1st birthday as an urban arts campus, as the historic buildings themselves turn 108. To celebrate in style, Golden Belt has lined up an art packed evening. It will be 3 hours of various forms of artstic expression, from dramatic to visual to culinary.

The celebration is free, open to the public, and runs from 6-9pm. Here is the list of events and their descriptions, directly from the Golden Belt event site:

ADF SITE-SPECIFIC DANCE

To kick things off, ADF presents Golden Belt, a site-specific work choreographed by NC native Mark Dendy. Following a 6:00pm champagne, chocolate and strawberries reception on the top floor of Building 2, Dendy’s world premiere will surround and intersect as you sip on the sweet tastes of summer. Beginning at 6:30pm, the 30-35 minute free-flowing show will be danced three times, with subsequent shows to follow at 7:05 and 7:40. Dancers will use all of Building 2 for the site-specific piece. Come and go as you like!

ACCIDENTS ADVANCE MOST OF OUR LIVES

One floor down (Building 2, Floor 2), catch a glimpse of Holly Hanessien’s 24-hour exhibition. Suspended vertically from wooden beams, the sculptural works spell out a word from a poetic verse by Bill Reichard, a Minnesotan poet. They appear to float down from the ceiling above, hovering over a pattern of mirrors on the floor, thus reflecting a distorted memory back to the viewer.

GOODNIGHT EVERYTHING

On the ground floor of Building 2, Little Green Pig Theatrical Concern hits the stage at 8:15pm. Experience the world premiere of John Fidel Justice's haunting comedy that makes universal the mindset of a few individuals who want the world to play by their rules.

NEW WORKS AT LABOURLOVE GALLERY

Pop in next door to LabourLove Gallery and check out the new collection of figurative artwork from Kelly Dew and Wendy Kowalski (thru Sep 11). Treat yourself to brand new giclée prints (or the real deal), custom t-shirts, and more. Jason Salemme will be back, this time tasting a summer home-brew, aptly named LabourLove.

OPEN ARTIST STUDIOS

Follow the giant 3 to continue your shopping expedition in Building 3’s thirty-five open artist studios. Meet the artists and explore their studio work spaces. Discover a breadth of new and original artwork, jewelry and more for sale.

BIG LOVE

In ROOM 100, King Kenney’s new exhibition BIG LOVE underscores how society’s fairy tale depiction of romantic love may be the primary contributor to rising divorce rates and declining optimism among young adults regarding the prospect of 'happily ever after'. Through his distinctive labyrinth storyboards, he details the rise and fall of his own failed encounter with 'big love'. A solo violinist will provide a stimulating soundscape for the exhibition.

MINDWORKS OPEN HOUSE

Continue through the courtyard and down the stairs where the MindWorks Multimedia team awaits you in Building 5! Join them in celebrating the grand opening of their new office and production facilities! Enjoy live jazz, wine, light hors d’oeuvres and a special exhibition of work from local artist, Lisa Creed. One of Lisa’s paintings will be raffled with all proceeds going to Urban Ministries of Durham, a community-based organization that has provided emergency services such as food, clothing, shelter and counseling to people in need in Durham since 1983.

Head over to the visitor lot and get your fill of delicious street fare from the OnlyBurger and Sabor Taco trucks! Plus, Daisy Cakes will have cupcakes in celebration of Golden Belt turning one!
