Tap Project and Cabaret Weekend

Durhamites can look forward to taking a step back into the past, as this weekend we'll have not one, but two vintage style events. These just so happen to coincide with the opening of Dolly's Vintage at 213 West Main Street - do your shopping before the weekend lands!

First off, on Friday at Motorco we have the third annual Triangle Tap Project Benefit Dance. Featuring an epic battle of the bands between two of the best swing bands in the Southeast: the Atomic Rhythm Allstars and the Russ Wilson Swingtet. This is probably the first battle of the bands featuring swing bands in Durham since the 40's. For those that would like to brush up their swing dancing skills, Joe Jackson of the Hot Club of Durham will be providing free beginners swing dance lessons before the bands start. If you're not tuckered out from all the dancing at Motorco, head over to the Trotter building for a late night dance session.

There's a $10 suggested donation at the door, but all funds raised go to the UNICEF Tap Project, UNICEF’s campaign to provide clean water and sanitation to children in developing countries. Dance lessons will be at 7pm, live music at 8pm, and late night dancing from 11:30pm till 3am.

Saturday, Cuban Revolution will be recreating the supper club atmosphere, with the help of Chifferobe Caberet and a bunch of local talent. Comedienne and chanteuse, Miss. Wensday, will be accompanied by pianist, Clark Stern, who has worked with many of the best artists in jazz and blues, including The Cab Calloway Orchestra. This is the first collaboration between the Providence-based femme fatale and Triangle Area-based musician. A bit of dancing and burlesque is on the menu, courtesy of Joe Jackson, Joei Reed, Meka La Crem, and Kristen Minsky.

The doors will open at 9pm, with the show starting at 10pm. Tickets are $10 in advance and $20 at the door. Vintage attire is encouraged and really helps to set the mood for the evening. I must say that Miss. Minsky has treated me to Chifferobe shows in the past and they were all real swell.

So, don your favorite fedora or prized pearls and head out on the town for some quality dancing and entertainment. Stay classy Durham!
