The Weekend Has Landed - June 11th

Welcome, welcome to a hot and muggy weekend. Although I do admit, the prospect of sitting on the porch during a Sunday afternoon thunderstorm does sound quite nice.

If you'd like to revel in some air conditioning, our top pick would be the Crime Noir Film Series over at the Carolina Theatre. What is crime noir, you ask? It's "a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations." Featuring films from the 40's through the early 60's, the series is going on now through Thursday the 17th.

Our stream of consciousness carries on to a completely different event at the same historic theatre on Saturday, the Paws for Applause Pet Fashion Show and Parade. Supported by the Animal Protection Society of Durham and Independent Animal Rescue, you can check out all the pets for free, or enter your own in the competition for $20. And yes, this event is also a great excuse to post a picture of a dog and cat about to high-five each other. 12pm.

The good news about Saturday night is that there is plenty going on. The bad news, is that you probably will be forced to choose which events to attend. Here we go:

Local Night @ Fullsteam Brewery - There will be great local music featuring Mount Moriah, The Jackets, and Durham's very own punk rock marching band, Scene of the Crime Rovers. After the bands, the dance party starts with DJ Jason Perlmutter spinning his unique collection of Carolina Soul Records. Local Indian food will be for sale from the soon to be Vimala's Curryblossom Cafe in Chapel Hill, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options. Presented by Durham Central Market. Doors at 6pm, downbeat at 6:30pm, $5.

Saturday Night Main Event 3 @ Triangle Brewing Company - In preparation for their "Stumblemania 3" pub crawl on July 10th, TBC has been holding some training sessions at their brewery, combining the common bedfellows of beer and bands. On the stage for this session will be Birds and Arrows and The Butterflies. Gates open at 6pm, music starts at 7 and 8:30. RSVP to Rick.

Inaugural LEWWD Event @ James Joyce - Come cheer on your favorite contests at the NC premier women's arm wrestling event, and help support the Durham Crisis Response Center. Check out our feature on this. Doors at 8pm, contest starts at 9pm. $5.
