The Halloween Weekend Has Landed - October 30th

Check out our two features on events this weekend, It's Zombie Season and They Say That In The Army... Also going throughout the weekend is the Durham Jaycee's 37th Annual Haunted House.

*Friday*

The Durham Zombie Lurch - Dress as a Zombie, be a victim, be a spectator! They always make at least one stop along the way in the vicinity of the Federal for a bit of refreshment; people can join along the way or come out and watch. The lurch will start at sundown (~6:30pm) in the parking lot across from Piedmont on Foster St.

FunkFest
@ The DPAC - Taking the stage will be six of the most celebrated funk groups in history: Con Funk Shun, Sugarfoot’s, Ohio Players, Dazz Band, Slave, and the Bar-Kays. $37.50/8pm.

Gal Costa with Romero Lubambo @ Reynolds Industries Theater - Costa was the most compelling singer behind Brazil’s Tropicália movement, and she will be accompanied only by Lubambo, the finest Brazilian guitarist on the planet. $30/8pm.

Turbulence Presents Lanie Robertson's "The Insanity of Mary Girard: A Nightmare in One Act" @ Common Ground Theatre - In 1790, Mary Girard is committed to an asylum. Having become pregnant by another man, her husband has had her declared legally insane. Mary sits in a chair as the “furies” dance around and impersonate people from her past. $12/8pm. Also 3pm and 8pm on Saturday.

Caleb Calypso and the Midnight Marauders @ Manbites Dog Theatre - As the Cold War sputters to an end, a young American soldier struggles to plan his future in a world that's about to change forever. World premiere of a new play by North Carolina playwright Howard Craft. $17/8:15pm. Also at 8:15pm on Saturday.

The Derek Trucks Band @ Carolina Theatre - With special guest Th' Bullfrog. $35/8pm.

Buzzkills @ Papa Mojo's - This Buzzkills performance, and the casting out of demons, was custom-made for Halloween Eve. $8/9:30pm.

Live Music @ Broad Street Cafe - Paul Daniel at 8pm, Family Sircle at 10pm.

Hallows Eve @ The Pinhook - Missy Thangs at 10pm, Spacelab's vinyl LP release show at 11pm, Shipwrecker's CD release show at midnight.

*Saturday*

Habitat Halloween Bike Ride - The "spooktacular" sixth-annual Halloween Bike Ride benefits Habitat for Humanity of Durham. Experience scenic views of Durham County as you ride 31, 62, or 100 miles. All routes are fully supported and start and finish at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown Durham. Gear up for a "ghoulish" good time and compete for best costume! $45/9am.

Second Annual Preservation Durham Ghost (Building) Tour - Not your standard “spooky dead people” tour, this ghost building tour will highlight the architectural ghosts of by-gone structures that continue to haunt us. This year we will explore the area between Brightleaf Square and West Village. Tour participants will witness the streetscapes of yore reappear before their own eyes: the Four Acres and Fairview mansions, the impressive Southern Conservatory of Music, massive tobacco factories and warehouse, and many more! FREE/1pm.

Triangle Brewing Company Brewery Tour - FREE/1pm.

Hallow-Eno @ West Point Park - Hallow-Eno is a Durham Halloween tradition, held annually at Durham's West Point on the Eno. Hallow-Eno features family-friendly entertainment, including trick-or-treating, hay rides and campfires complete with ghost stories. FREE/6pm.

Boo-kulele III @ Broad Street Cafe - The annual Halloween-themes ukulele-centric show and party thrown by High Strung Music. Lots of performances planned this year, including the Durham Ukulele Orchestra, and the ukulele costume contest. Concerts, play-alongs, uke costume competition (open to all ages - dress up the uke, not the player), and lots of fun! 3pm.

Halloween Party
@ Broad Street Cafe - Bob Funck at 8pm, Once and Future Kings at 10pm, costume contest w/prizes at 11pm, Goodbye, Titan at 11:15pm.

Monsters Ball 2 @ Club 9 - 3 Bars, 10 DJ’s, 3 Themed Rooms:
  • Guest House – Sound Cartel DJ’s, Marshall Jones, Slipstream and Nugz (and special, special guest Chris C!) will provide the best in: House, Jungle, Techno and Electro.
  • Dance Hall – “Sprite Step Off” DJ Battle Champion and NY native, DJ Prince will provide a sound bwoy bureill; blending, double flipping, scratching, mixing and backspinning: Hip Hop/R&B/Reggae and (ahem) Dancehall.
  • Vinyl Floor – J’Cougarz (DJ Fifi Hi Fi and DJ Lady Factual) vs. Sex Panthers (Chocolate Thunder and Kid Dyn-O-Mite) in an epic Cat Fight. Also, the local "45 King", DJ Nate has informed us that he will make an appearance. Expect to hear: Golden Era Rap, New Wave, Disco, Funk, Soul, Breaks, Soundtracks… EVERYTHING imaginable.
  • Costume Contest – $100 Grand Prize awarded at midnight! Entry deadline 11pm.
  • Doors at 9pm, FREE admission until 10pm, $5 'til 11pm, $10 thereafter.
Mel Melton & the Wicked Mojos @ Papa Mojo's - Pull out your most creative, ghoulish, enchanting, or bewitching attire for our 2nd Annual Costume Contest! Prizes are in store for the most stunning & outlandish. And, The Wicked Mojos are ready to put a spell on this evening’s festivities with some swamp-stompin’ blues & zydeco music. $10/9:30pm.

Halloween Jam @ All People's Grill - Featuring Black Ice Blues Band. 9:30pm.

Halloween Bash @ The Pinhook - Amps Do Furnish a Room (Television cover band) at 10pm, Heart of Glass (Blondie Cover Band) at 11pm, Girl Romonas (Female Ramones cover band) at midnight.

*Sunday*

Chef Shirle's Vegan Brunch @ The Pinhook - $7 gets you a prix fix menu with coffee. *Tofu eggs benedict, roasted potatoes, mixed greens and coffee (or bloody maries or mimosas... you pick). 12-2pm.
