"The Record" Opens at Nasher

The Nasher Museum of Art is unveiling their latest exhibition in a special preview week, starting tomorrow.

The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl features work by 41 artists, spanning 50 years of contemporary art - including sound work, sculpture, installation, drawing, painting, photography, video and performance.

The exhibit runs through February 2011, and includes a full calendar of associated events, the first of which will be their Public Opening Event and DJ Party. It kicks off at 8:30pm on Wednesday 8/25. Many of the artists will be in attendance, with New York DJs Piotr Orlov and Dave Tompkins manning the turn tables.

Two bands will be performing live - Jason Harrod at 7pm and The Wigg Report at 8pm. Doors open at 6:14pm. If you don't want to fight the crowds and heat on opening night, the tavern will also be open on Saturday from noon-until and Sunday from noon-8pm.

For the rest of the weekend, escape the heat to check out the NC Gay & Lesbian Film Festival at the Carolina Theatre. We put together a handy-dandy calendar that lists all of the showtimes.

15th Annual NC Gay & Lesbian Film Festival

This weekend marks the arrival of the 15th Annual North Carolina Gay & Lesbian Film Festival at the Carolina Theatre.

With a lineup of 29 well selected films, this year's festival promises not to disappoint. As with any film festival, planning your schedule is important.

Back in February for the Nevermore Film Festival, we premiered a Durham Socialite feature to aid movie goers, and we've brought it back for NCGLFF. Without further adieu, I present to you the Durham Film Festival Calendar, populated with all of this weekend's films. It lists the show times, plot descriptions, and viewer's guides in an easy to read calendar format, which can be conveniently imported to your favorite mobile device.

Counter Culture Coffee Brew Down

Durham based Counter Culture will be hosting a coffee brewing contest at their HQ, at 7pm tonight.

If you think you can brew a solid cup-a-joe, throw down $5, pick your brewing method, and leave it to the judges to decide your fate.

If you are more interested in the spectacle, and enjoy free food and beverages, then stop by to help support the EarthShare Gulf Coast Restoration Fund.

Local stalwarts Dolly Mama Handmade Chocolates, Toast, and Wine Authorities will all be providing the sustenance.
